Every person who has been studying English for at least a few months is interested in what level of English he or she has already mastered. There are the following levels of foreign language proficiency: A1 (beginner, elementary), A2 (Pre-Intermediate), B1 (Intermediate), B2 (Upper-Intermediate), C1 (Advanced) and the highest level C2 (Proficient).
There are international exams to accurately identify your level of English proficiency. However, after passing such an exam, you will not only find out your level of English, but you will also receive many benefits, such as the opportunity to receive higher education abroad, the opportunity to get a decent and well-paid job, and it will also be your advantage when getting a green card.
International English exams are designed specifically for non-native speakers who are learning English as a foreign language. The most popular English exams are IELTS, TOEFL, TOEIC and FCE.
Let's take a look at each exam in more detail.
IELTS is an exam that tests your English proficiency in education, employment and daily life. Its results are accepted in higher educational institutions in 130 countries of the world. This exam is held in British English and is more likely to be suitable for the UK institutions as well as in the British Commonwealth (including Australia and New Zealand). The exam comes in two versions - Academic and General, depending on your educational or professional goals.
In some cases, IELTS is required to obtain a Canadian or Australian immigrant visa.
TOEFL (Test of English as a Foreign Language) is an international exam in English as a foreign language. The test was prepared by the Educational Testing Service (ETS). The main feature of the TOEFL exam is that it is based on American English, therefore, in order to pass successfully, you need to understand the lexical and grammatical subtleties that distinguish American English from British English.
TOEIC (Test of English for International Communication) - this exam is suitable for you if you plan to work in large world-famous international corporations. In this case, your prospective employer will most likely ask you to provide a certificate confirming your knowledge of Englishю The certificate that confirms that you not only know English, but are also able to conduct business meetings there, create effective presentations and hold negotiations at the international level.
FCE or B2 First is an international exam that confirms your proficiency in English at the Upper-Intermediate level. Having an FCE certificate indicates that you already have the necessary language skills to live and work comfortably in an English-speaking country or study at universities that teach in English.
All of these exams will test four basic language skills, namely Reading, Listening, Writing, and Speaking. Therefore, when studying English and, in particular, when preparing for an international exam, do not forget to pay attention to the development of all skills to successfully pass the exam and achieve your goal.
