I want to study with an English native speaker! Do you?

Modern learning opportunities allow you to study online with people from anywhere in the world. This opportunity can be used to learn English with a native speaker. An English native speaker is a person whose first language is English (or second language but still learnt from childhood and is used in the place where the person lives). Native speakers include British, Americans, Canadians and Australians. There are also a number of other countries for whose inhabitants English is also their native language, however, it may already have a number of deviations from the language that a person who studies it wants to master so much.

Both beginners and those who are already at a certain level think about this way of learning. Like any other way, learning English with a native speaker has its advantages and disadvantages.

Benefits of lessons with a native speaker

An opportunity to meet a person from another culture.

If you learn English not because you really need it, but because you are really interested in it, even if you need it for work, then you will certainly want to learn more about the country whose language you are studying, about the traditions, the way of life of the people who live in it. Also, you will always have an opportunity to compare life in your country and in the UK or another English-speaking country, exchange your own experiences and share various interesting facts about your motherland.

Colloquial language

Unlike classes with Russian-speaking teachers, communicating with native speakers allows you to learn more English jokes, phraseological units and slang. It is more customary for Russian-speaking teachers to teach you the literary language, the way it should be, but a native speaker can acquaint you with various simplifications in grammar, speech patterns that are characteristic only in colloquial speech. You can sometimes hear this in movies, especially TV shows.

It will be easier for you to get rid of the language barrier

When you speak with a Russian-speaking teacher in English, you still realize that even if you cannot say something in English, you can always be understood in Russian. However, in classes with a native speaker, this option will not work and this situation will stimulate you to remember everything you know and relieve you of the fear of communicating with English-speaking people.

Disadvantages of lessons with a native speaker

Often native speakers are not teachers

Native speakers can easily talk to you on absolutely any topic and you can hear a variety of vocabulary. However, they do not always have the knowledge of how to properly teach you. It may just be people who decided to try themselves in this area. Imagine that you are asked to teach Russian to a foreigner. Do you already know what tactics and strategies to use? Most likely, this will cause you a difficulty, because even we, knowing Russian seemingly perfectly, cannot immediately claim that we can teach it. Native speakers will not always be able to explain to you the grammatical subtleties of the language: why this or that is used in this way and not otherwise, because they are just used to it. Grammar can be well explained to you by a Russian-speaking teacher, as long in the past it was something new for them and they studied these aspects in more depth and in detail.

Speaking and pronunciation

On the one hand, this is a plus to hear foreigners speak and practice listening skills, but it is very important where your teacher is from. Very often, the region of the country  where they live can influence the style of speech and dialect, which will differ from what is more typical, for example, for the central part of the country, or the state, if we talk about the United States of America. During training, you will learn how the native speaker pronounces the words, so you need to take this into account in advance.

High cost of classes

The price of classes with native speakers is generally higher than with Russian-speaking teachers. This is related to the level of salaries in English-speaking countries, and also depends on the education, skill level and teaching experience of a native speaker.

Thus, one-to-one English lessons with a native speaker are suitable for you if you want to practice your speaking, learn more idioms, slang and culture of the country you are interested in.

If you are just starting your journey in learning English, then you might want to choose classes with a Russian-speaking teacher. Because it will be quite difficult for you to understand everything that the native speaker tells you, both in lexical terms and in grammar. At the beginning of learning a new language, it will be more useful if grammar is taught in your native language, so that you can draw parallels with the Russian language. Then it will be easier for you to understand it, rather than memorize it.
